Kyra Sedgwick has her character, Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson, nailed.

I don’t know what Kyra Sedgwick is really like but, if she’s at all like Deputy Chief Johnson, Kevin Bacon must have a very interesting home life.

I’m talking, of course, about her appearance in her new hit show, The Closer (Monday night 9:00PM EDT on Fox). If you haven’t yet caught it, I urge you to treat yourself next Monday night.

Deputy Chief Johnson has all the finesse of a Marx brother and all the cunning of the most wily fox. To say her people skills are lacking is missing the point. Her people skills are excellent – so much that her crime suspects, and her co-workers, never know when she’s blowing smoke up their patuties.

The first several episodes concentrated on her professional life. (Coming into a “men’s club” might have gotten her down, but not for long – and a long way from being out.)

Current episodes have her in a budding relationship. It’ll be fun to watch what develops. The object of her affection is an FBI agent – a long-time confidant of hers. He’s hunky and vulnerable – quite the catch. But, to paraphrase Sheryl Crowe – is he strong enough to be her man?

I can’t wait to find out!
